Kayaking Laguna Grande Bio Bay in Fajardo, Puerto Rico

What is a Bio Bay?

Bio bay refers to the Bioluminescence (bio = life, luminescence = light) single cell marine plankton known as dinoflagellates that literally glow when agitated. These tiny creatures emit a greenish blue sparkle in the water when agitated (or moved) by anything it comes into contact with.

Where are the Bioluminescence Bays?

There are five bioluminescent bays in the world: Halong Bay in Vietnam and Luminous Lagoon in Jamaica plus the remaining three Bahía Bioluminiscente are located in Puerto Rico. Mosquito Bay in Vieques (separate island to the East that is part of the territory of Puerto Rico), La Parguera in Lajas on the Southwest corner of the island, and finally the closest bio bay to San Juan (and easiest to get to) is Laguna Grande located in Fajardo on the Northeast corner of the island. Stand Up Paddleboard on Condado Lagoon | Adventure in San Juan Puerto Rico

Until quite recently, my Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) experience was limited to the tame gym pool.  Now that I live on a tropical island, I am hooked on SUP!  During the Women Who Live on Rocks writer’s retreat, we were invited to a fabulous morning adventure of SUP and kayaking on Condado Lagoon in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Humacao Natural Reserve | Hiking, Biking, Kayaking, Fishing Activities in Puerto Rico

The Humacao Natural Reserve is located on the East Coast of Puerto Rico mid-way on the island near the community of Palmas del Mar.  Behind the small unassuming entrance awaits big adventure exploring the lagoons, swamps, and wetlands.

Phoenix Zoo Lights | Winter Holiday Tradition

Every winter (since 1991) starting Thanksgiving week until early January, the Phoenix Zoo decks out the grounds in an amazing light show.  Phoenix ZooLights is a holiday tradition for locals and visitors alike.  For these few weeks every year, the Phoenix Zoo transforms into a holiday wonderland at night.

The mild winter temperatures in Phoenix (early evening in the 60’s F/18 C) are perfect to enjoy hot chocolate and walk around the Zoo admiring the light show.  Only some of the animals may be visible during the ZooLights event, but you may still get to see a Unicorn!

Charco Azul, Patillas | Fresh Water Natural Pool Puerto Rico Travel Guide

Ever since moving to Puerto Rico earlier this year, I am beach and water obsessed.   Coming from the hot, dry desert the beach is still a magical, mysterious place.  I am always on the hunt for special, secluded little places and ask all of the long-term residents about their favorite spots.  So I was surprised when multiple trusted locals told me about the secret mountain pools around the island.  Intrigued by other natural water activities, we decided on a visit to Charco Azul.

Charco Azul is a fresh water, natural swimming pool located in the southeast mountain region of Puerto Rico.   It is close  to our neighborhood in Palmas Del Mar.  It is also the most popular natural pool on the island.   We braced ourselves for huge crowds and (possible) disappointment, then drove out Sunday morning in the off season (August – November) to explore.
