For over 30 years, Puerto Ricans gather from all over the island to walk. Not in protest, or as a punishment, but as a community of nature lovers who set out each weekend for 2 months (February and March) to walk across the island. Known as the Caminata Panorámica, this annual walk goes coast to coast across the island of Puerto Rico. Starting in the east coast town of Maunabo and crossing under the mountain region of the island to complete the walk at the large town of Mayaguez.

Puerto Rico is a US Territory, and it seems more like a foreign country when it comes to healthcare. Here is everything about medical care, prescriptions, and laboratory tests that I wish I had known when we moved to Puerto Rico. The first time that my parents visited Puerto Rico, my Father ran out of his prescription insulin. His prescription and corresponding refill was through Walmart and we assumed that not only would Walmart US and Walmart Puerto Rico be the same, that also the US Medicare healthcare program would be the same. We never did get consistent information, but long story short, the insurance would not cover his prescribed insulin but did offer a lower dose insulin (without prescription) for less than the regular co-pay. The crisis was diverted and now my Father always verifies his insulin and all medication before coming to visit Puerto Rico.

Bio bay refers to the Bioluminescence (bio = life, luminescence = light) single cell marine plankton known as dinoflagellates that literally glow when agitated. These tiny creatures emit a greenish blue sparkle in the water when agitated (or moved) by anything it comes into contact with.
There are five bioluminescent bays in the world: Halong Bay in Vietnam and Luminous Lagoon in Jamaica plus the remaining three Bahía Bioluminiscente are located in Puerto Rico. Mosquito Bay in Vieques (separate island to the East that is part of the territory of Puerto Rico), La Parguera in Lajas on the Southwest corner of the island, and finally the closest bio bay to San Juan (and easiest to get to) is Laguna Grande located in Fajardo on the Northeast corner of the island. Even though I live in a beach side community in Puerto Rico, I like to venture out to San Juan for a little staycation on occasion. Anytime I know that I need to be in San Juan two days in a row is excuse enough for me to try out a different resort. This visit my Sister joined me, her first visit to Puerto Rico, so I wanted a luxury resort with amazing pools and beach access in or near Old San Juan. La Concha was exactly what we were looking for.
Puerto Rico has some pretty epic annual festivals like San Sebastian in Old San Juan every January, and there are plenty of other activities year round including the unofficial pork festival every weekend at Guavate!
Every Saturday and Sunday the main road through Guavate transforms from sleepy little town to party central. Guavate is the home of Lechonera, these are food stalls and restaurants that feature roasted pork, so much so this area of Puerto Rico is known as the Pork Highway. Located in the mountains of Puerto Rico, the best way to visit the pork highway is from the town of Caguas, then head East on highway 184.
